Abstract

This article addresses the conditions in which many nonprofit organizations dedicated to women's and girls' issues operate. A sample of entities located in Haiti, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and Venezuela present a panorama of nonprofit work in the region, including enabling grant makers.

Introduction: This study seeks to close an information gap and provide visibility to the actions carried out by women in Latin America and the Caribbean in favor of other women. Our object of study were non-profit entities and donors from a sample of Caribbean countries.

Method: The study is a documentary analysis, utilizing online surveys, and semi-structured interviews. In addition, digital netnographic methods were applied.

Results: 100% of the service entities stated that femicides are the number one problem they address. Moreover, 70% recognized that they need to improve organizational capacities, and 86% confirmed that they mobilize philanthropic resources for their causes. More than 70% of donors in the study said they donate to the causes of women and girls. However, they do not necessarily label their giving as feminist philanthropy.

Conclusions: It is possible to interconnect the concepts of gender and philanthropy, and understand the doner and funder relationship in contributing to the future of nonprofit entities in the region. Various forms of giving can be identified suggesting social investment strategies that can be used to develop a recognizable effort of feminist philanthropy.
